Lecture Title: iNPH in the modern landscape of neurodegenerative diseases
Chifumi Iseki is a neurologist and Ph.D. graduate from Yamagata University Graduate School of Medicine (2007), specializing in neurology and behavioral neurology. As a member of the Japanese Society of Neurology, the Japanese Society of Dementia Research, and the Japanese Society of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, her expertise spans the spectrum of neurological disorders affecting older adults. With a focus on cognition, physical disability, and behavioral aspects, Iseki is deeply invested in enhancing the quality of life for individuals facing dementia and other neurological dysfunctions, especially idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH, Hakim disease). Her career in the hydrocephalus society began with epidemiological research on a cohort in a rural area of Japan, revealing a 0.5% prevalence of possible iNPH among the older population. Additionally, her research uncovered the existence of asymptomatic ventriculomegaly with features of iNPH on MRI (AVIM), serving as a prodromal risk state for iNPH. Since 2020, she has collaborated on a gait study aimed at developing new support systems. In recent years, she has conducted a review of the comorbidity/differential diagnosis of iNPH and other dementia and movement disorder diseases and has also made recommendations for their treatment in Japan.
