Dr. Eric Schmidt
Dr Eric Schmidt, Academic Neurosurgery, Toulouse, France
Eric Schmidt is a French neurosurgeon with a special interest in Geriatric Neurosurgery. He is a consultant in Toulouse, trained in Clermont Ferrand and completed his PhD in Cambridge, UK. His expertise is dedicated to optimising the neurosurgical care of the older patients, with the aim of improving autonomy at home.He is a recognised expert in normal pressure hydrocephalus, in particular the lumbar infusion test to characterise in vivo cerebrospinal fluid mechanics. He leads the EANS Geriatric Neurosurgery Task Force to ensure the safety and quality of life of older patients undergoing neurosurgical procedure in Europe, but also worldwide. He is involved in transdisciplinary research projects on brain aging, by integrating expertise in engineering, physics, physiology and biology. His scientific goal is to combine multi-physics, multi-omics and multi-scale brain datasets to better understand the biomechanics of brain ageing. His clinical goal is to improve the neurosurgical care and pathway of older patients through a rational and evidence-based approach. His ultimate milestone is to initiate a shift in the Neurosurgical community from techno-centrism to patient-centrism, from a focus on quantity of life to a focus on quality of life for the older patients, with the goal of ageing at home.
